Abstract:
The rapid urbanization of Sub-Saharan Africa from purely agrarian society to a city based one, is an interesting phenomenon to study. However, recent studies have shown that there is a lack of understanding of socio-cultural factors and subtle power relations that brought about these transformations, especially in the developing society. Thus, the paper reports a qualitative study in which interviews were conducted and sizeable numbers of open ended questionnaires were administered and analysed based on the Actor Network Theory. The study examines the often overlooked factors that have impacted on the growth of the built environment, by taking a closer look at the urban centre in relation to the main food market called Oja Oba located in the centre of the city of Akure, Nigeria. During the course of the field research, respondents observed that the general appearance of the city, urban lifestyle and city liveability is directly impacted by the issue of food waste, waste generation and waste disposal. The paper concludes that in the drive towards a sustainable city in the developing world and effective waste management there is need to understand the layers of underlying socio-cultural issues that prompted these changes which are subtle and sometime quite sudden with intended and unintended consequences.

Abstract:
The phenomenon of modern conservation can be said to be virtually new in the developing world, though, it has been practiced extensively in the developed world. In almost every settlement, buildings of historic importance are under threat from either destruction or replacement with imported western technology and culture. The aim of this study is to assess the problems and prospects of conserving sites of historic buildings in Calabar in Nigeria. This study is dependent on both primary and secondary data. Primary data were obtained by direct observation, interviews and administration of questionnaires while secondary data were extracted from published and unpublished sources which include text books, journals and conference proceedings. A comprehensive reconnaissance survey of the study area was carried out and twenty-eight (28) historic buildings were identified. A stratified simple random sampling was adopted by dividing the buildings into categories out of which twelve (12) were selected as the sample size. The findings revealed that virtually all the buildings are old and over 100 years but greater percentage (66.7%) of them are in good and fair conditions while about 75.0% of them enjoy infrastructural facilities like electricity to date. It was recommended that Government should make the rehabilitation of these buildings a priority and fund for this could be achieved through establishment of National Trust Fund.

Abstract:
This study examines the living condition of the people in Odo-Ikoyi and Isolo quarters area of Akure, Nigeria. The study employed the use of questionnaire to gather information on the condition of buildings and socio-economic variables. This is backed up by site investigation survey to identify the types and nature of the environmental activities in the areas. Simple table, percentages and explanatory paragraphs were used for the analysis. A lot of problems bedevilled Odo-Ikoyi and Isolo quarters, ranging from; old age, poor housing condition, missing environmental amenities, poverty and lack of attention from both the residents and the government. These conditions have affected and deteriorated the area into slum and squalid environment. The study notes that there is hope in restoring the slum into a good and habitable environment and therefore recommends that government should wake up to her responsibility by providing decent living environment to her citizen. It is also recommended that the residents of the area be empowered by government through its poverty alleviation and skill acquisition programmes. Other recommendations include educating and enlightenment campaign to reawaken the minds of the residents about the needs to develop their environment. The NGOs and the multinational organization are also recommended to be brought in to the redevelopment, rehabilitation and renovation of the areas.

Abstract:
The cases of building collapse in Nigeria have reached a lamentable and worrisome state. This paper aims at examining the incidence of building collapse with a view to identifying the possible causes and effects and make recommendations. The method of investigation is primarily through documentary and observation. Six major cities were focused on from which generalization and inferences were made. The study revealed ten major causes of building collapse in Nigeria. Among these were; the use of poor/substandard material 27%, lack f maintenance and abandonment 15%, obsolescence (old age) 13% and lack of efficient supervision during construction work 10%. Recommendations include; the enforcement of the National Building Code (NBC), control and inspection of imported building materials before use and involvement of all professional bodies in monitoring building process in the country.

Abstract:
A review of urban policies of our time reveals that successive administrative regime had progressively shown shaper perception of the country’s urban development with particular reference to housing problems without enough consideration for upgrading and renewal of the existing ones which are substandard, unaffordable, inaccessible and of course suffering from environmental degradation. This paper presents an analysis of urban slum, causes of urban decay, problems encountered in the treatments of decay, and other policy guideline towards redressing these problems.

Abstract:
University communities are integral part of the host communities in which they are located and many a time display certain attributes similar to that of the host community in term of spatial interaction. This paper looks at the movement pattern and factors responsible for this pattern in the transport shuttle system of a bi-campus setting. The researcher employed the use of questionnaire survey and documentary analysis in seeking information on the spatial interaction pattern of different people in the university community. The types of modes available, the choice of mode of respondents, and the reasons for the choice of specific mode were determined using information derived from the questionnaire survey. This study reveals that land use pattern among other factors affects the spatial interaction of the people in the study area and the choice of modes of transport is highly determined by the available transport in diverse ways. Recommendations are made as to improve the efficiency of the transportation service in the university communities.

Effects Of Slum Formation On Residential Core Area Of Akure, Nigeria
Publication Authors:
 Owoeye, J. O. And Omole, F. K.
Year Published:
 2011
Abstract:
The reality of the core of cities becoming slums generally tended to follow the theoretical path established by Burgess. Adapting the tenets of his classical planning model to describing the spatial distribution of land-use in Akure, this study examined the factors responsible for the formation of slums at the city’s center and as well investigates its effects on the residential environments. Method of investigation is essentially both descriptive and analytical in nature which generally based on field survey. The study examined the existing situation in the study area in terms of its housing system and the condition of infrastructure facilities available in the neighbourhood. It also examined the socio-economic status of respondents, the perception of their living environmentsand problems experienced. The major research instruments used to gather relevant information include questionnaire administration, direct observation, photographs, housing demographic and facility survey. The empirical survey carried out revealed high degree of deplorable condition of the living environments and inadequacy of essential facilities for comfortable living. However, extensive redevelopment (in part of the area) and provision of urban basic services are strongly recommended as means of restoring life back to the area. This should be supported with improved sanitation strategy for sustainable management of the area.

Abstract:
Market centres are socio-cultural, political and economic institutions created by man. They are of different types and have land use implications and functions. This study adopts three main methods for its data gathering, namely; inventory survey (to identify the existing market centres and their facilities), documentary analysis of literature and lastly the use of questionnaires directed at the sellers, shoppers and officers in-charge of the market centres. Findings reveal the existence of five related types of markets based on periods and durations of operation. The patronage of sellers and shoppers depends on the types of markets. Market administration was found to be undertaken by group of people called market associations, the local government councils and the community/kingship. Recommendations include: the establishment of more market centres in the state, provision of market facilities, construction and open-up of roads to facilitate easy distribution of goods and services to every part of the state.
