PGD in Urban and Regional Planning

a.   Philosophy of Programme

The PGD programme offers an educational opportunity designed to meet specific needs of those who want to move up the professional ladder. It is specifically designed for those who have successfully completed their Higher National Diploma (HND) in a Polytechnic or College of Technology but could not proceed to the University for a Master’s degree on account of the terminal nature of the HND programme. Successful candidates of this PGD programme can be registered for the Master’s degree programme or work in a variety of planning agencies. The PGD programme is designed to meet the following objectives:

  1. To provide a pool of professional manpower imbued with a deep understanding of the art and science of physical planning so as to reduce the Manpower shortage experienced at various levels of government and private planning agencies.
  2. To give opportunity to HND holders aspiring for the postgraduate degree in Urban and Regional Planning in recognized universities. The programme will qualify them for further studies such as the Master’s degree programme.
  3. To provide opportunity for work in the variety of planning agencies and subsequent lateral crossing into the professional cadre.
  4. To produce a crop of students who can meet the registration requirements of the professional societies such as the Nigerian Institute of Town Planners (NITP) and the Town Planners’ Registration Council of Nigeria (TOPREC).

  

M.Tech in Urban and Regional Planning

a.   Philosophy of Programme

The M.Tech programme in Urban and Regional Planning offers an educational opportunity designed to meet het specific needs of graduates of Town Planning, Social Sciences and other approved related disciplines in becoming professional Town Planner at postgraduate degree level. The curriculum for the programme focuses on providing the basic conceptual knowledge and analytical skills required to provide feasible solutions to problems confronting the environment. It is both academic and a professional postgraduate degree programme designed to qualify its holders to become corporate members of the Nigerian Institute of Town Planners (NITP) and be able to register with the Town Planners’ Registration Council of Nigeria (TOPREC). This is after the 2-year qualification experience and passing the prescribed professional qualification examination. The department offers 2 academic sessions (4 semesters) M.Tech programme. The content and structure of the programme prepares the students for the various professional challenges that lie ahead of them. The students are prepared for rigorous academic and intellectual demands that the environment is known for. The department has full complement of qualified, topflight practitioners made up of 15 full-time academic staff. Most of these are fully registered with the NITP and TOPREC. The department has facilities such as Design Studios, Library, Computer Centre and other planning education paraphernalia. The objectives of the programme are:

  1. To produce a pool of professional reputable graduates of Urban and Regional Planning capable of handling planning policy matters at national, regional and local levels.
  2. To provide opportunities to social science graduates of related professional disciplines to train as professional town planners,
  3. To provide higher calibre graduates who can provoke intellectual debate and evolve theoretical and philosophical concepts for the expansion of frontier of knowledge in Urban and Regional Planning

 

Ph.D in Urban and Regional Planning

a.   Philosophy of Programme

The Ph.D degree is purely by research geared towards preparing students for advanced research and academic career in Urban and Regional Planning. The Ph.D will be awarded on the basis of a thesis that represents the outcome of a research, relevant to the principles and practice of Urban and Regional Planning. The programme will also embrace a specially designed programme of research training through regular staff/postgraduate seminars where efforts of students and staff are discussed.
