Course Synopsis

This course is a second year course on basic elements of planning designed primarily for students in Urban and Regional Planning, Remote Sensing and Geo-informatics and Estate Management. It is a course that provides basic knowledge on planning models – iconic, analogue and symbolic models (descriptive, predictive and planning), the planning process narrating stages and techniques in planning activities, and the process of generating and transforming urban and regional structure in the global system with particular emphasis on the trend in the formation of human communities – village, town and city. It also focuses on the city structure and urban system including the formal and informal economic, social and physical structure.

Planning Studio I – Graphic Presentation

Course Synopsis

This course covers graphic techniques. Land use survey and analysis of local setting. It also covers the study of planning problems of site; the use of AUTOCAD (introduction) and project planning at an urban scale with a demonstration and application of the principles of planning to a range of interrelated urban land use problems. Students are expected to display the understanding of the general urban environment as well as the detailed physical interrelationship. The course also covers the study of relationship of small scale residential areas with technical report writing.

Course Synopsis

This course is a second year course on population and urbanisation studies designed primarily for students in Urban and Regional Planning. It is a course that provides basic knowledge on world population growth and distribution, the demographic and cultural characteristics including types and causes of population movement and the concept of environmental resources and the influence on culture. It also focuses on the relationship between urbanisation and industrialisation, transportation, education and modernization, world distribution of terrain, mineral, water and biotic resources, policies and strategies in planning for urban and regional development in relation to urbanisation in less industrialized countries.

Course Synopsis

This course is a second year course on urban studies designed primarily for students in Urban and Regional Planning and Estate Management. It is a course that provides basic knowledge on history of planning as a statutory undertaking in developed and developing nations, the experience of industrial revolution in Great Britain and Public Health Act and the aspirations and concepts of the Pioneer Planners in their physical planning proposals. As a theoretically-based course, it focuses on theories and models of urban land use and growth, the growth factors as they determine forms of city, the dimensions of urban problems and application of space allocation standards in the organization of human environment.

Introduction to Information and Computer Technology in Planning

Course Synopsis

The students will undergo lectures and instructions with practical sessions on application of Geographic Information System and AutoCAD to mapping. The lecture sessions will focus on introduction to fundamentals of Computer technology, Geographic Information System and Global Positioning System (GPS) Technology and digital data capture using GPS receiver and scanner. Other areas will include on-screen digitizing and introduction to AutoCAD application in design. The practical sessions will involve group assignments on activity area layout of different projects which include Hospital, Nursery and Primary School, and Inter-City Bus Terminal. The sessions will be carried out partly on individual basis and partly on group basis. Data capture of project areas will be done on group basis while individuals will carry out the design based on given spatial standards.

Natural Resources and Environmental Planning

Course Synopsis

This course will expose students to the study of environmental planning, the problems involved as well as the possible solutions, the natural resources found in the environment and the need for their conservation. Basic concepts of the environment such as biodiversity, sustainable development among others will be discussed.

Course Synopsis

This is an introductory course to the concepts of law, planning administration and procedures in Nigeria. This will expose students to the aspect of general law, land law and conveyance. The Origin and source of Nigeria land Law, planning laws, the law of tort and contract, legal control of statutory bodies, appeals and enforcements among others are expected to be touched in this course. Case studies and application of planning law to existing situations will be examined.
