Course Synopsis

As a follow up to lectures on slum formation and cities decay(URP 409: Urban Renewal Process), students are expected to transfer the knowledge in that course into practical demonstration in urban renewal designs class by using appropriate urban renewal concepts. Emphasis is expected to be placed on approaches such as redevelopment, rehabilitation, renovation, conservation and probably economic revitalization.

Course Synopsis

This course is an exploratory guide to research writing and techniques. The course is primarily designed for students to guide them in the process of writing seminar paper and research thesis. The process and the methodology involves in carryout research proposal are major component of the course. Adoption of appropriate methodology is an essential characteristic of quality research studies irrespective of the discipline with which they are related, these are the basis in which the course is built around. Essential topics to be covered in the course includes the importance and purpose of research; identification and definition of planning problems; sources of information in planning; research methods; designing and planning research techniques of measurement and classification; attributes of planning research and problems; referencing and documentation among others.

Principles of Urban Planning and Management

Course Synopsis

The course exposes the students to the knowledge on roles of Town Planners at the different eras in Nigeria, that is, pre-colonial and post-colonial eras. Also the students would know the evolution and responsibilities of the Local Planning Authorities (LPAs) as spelt out in the various legislations (over the years) guiding their establishment. Students would know the modalities for the participation of the communities (i.e. people) in plan formulation and implementation. Students would be exposed to basic knowledge in Management and the use of motivation as management tool in relation to Urban and Regional Planning practice. The attributes of a good professional (Town Planner) would also be taught.

Course Synopsis

This is a follow-up to URP 208- planning law and procedures which was an introductory course taking at 200 Level. Unlike the formal, this course URP 407 goes into details of some specific planning laws. Including, (i) urban and regional planning law, decree 88 of 1992, (ii) the land use decree, (iii) the TOPREC enabling law, (|iv) EIA law among others. Case studies and application of planning law to existing situations will be examined.

Course Synopsis

This course will expose the students to the dynamics of city and city as living organism; definition and terms of Urban Renewal; types of slum and characteristics of slum, slum formation and cycle of poverty in relation to slum development; historical perspective and contemporary crisis of slum development; Urban renewal as a technique for improving living condition; cost and benefits of Urban renewal schemes; Economic and social effects of clearance and redevelopment, spatial planning, urban renewal exercise, urban renewal policy both in Nigeria and other countries; Legal basis for and legislations for Urban renewal; local case studies of Urban Renewal Scheme; Urban renewal Agencies; finance for Urban renewal; public participation in Urban Renewal.

As a follow up to other concepts and basic theories in planning, the course is specifically designed to educate students on the three board groups of theories in urban and regional planning.

Environmental Impact Assessment

Course Synopsis

This course aims to introduce students to the procedure for carrying out Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) on programs and projects. Specifically, the students shall be equipped with the concept, methodologies and tools of EIA. The various steps and processes involved in EIA such as screening, scoping, mitigation, environmental management plan among others shall be disseminated to the students. Various laws, regulations and standards relating to EIA shall be exposed to the students in this course. All mandatory projects that require an EIA and those that do not require an EIA shall be enumerated. In addition, the course shall introduce the process for carrying out environmental auditing to the students. Finally, biodiversity and biodiversity conservation shall be emphasized in the course.
