Abstract:
The growth of Nigeria’s urban population in both absolute and relative terms has been accompanied by city formation of existing built-up areas and the emergence of new and identifiably ‘urban’ settlements. The phenomenon has turned from being advantageous to problematic, affecting most urbanized part of the country without recourse to solution out of this menace, This paper attempts an evaluation of urbanization dynamics and city formation in Nigeria with a view to making meaningful suggestions for sustainable development. Therefore, this paper explores the process of urbanization in Africa as well as Nigeria in which the threshold of urbanization in the continent were unfolded. The problems of city formation in Nigeria to include, urban housing degeneration, poverty, high death rate, disease epidemic, pollution and low biodiversity index among others. This limits the trend of sustainable urban development in Nigeria, while the effects of rapid urbanization on city formation in Nigeria include, urban sprawling informal suburban development, informal development anti activities of designated open space, traffic congestion, increase tendencies in slum and informal settlement, social inequality exclusion, insecurity, climate change among others. This paper suggested that, to efficiently tackle these challenges and take advantages of the benefits of urbanization requires a coherent approach which should offer a distinct opportunity to achieve global strategic goals by dint of harnessing the transformative forces of urbanization. In ensuring the realization of sustainable development agenda, the key players include the governments at federal, state and local levels, as well as the citizen/community alongside project facilitators and experts. The problems of urbanization if not tackled adequately, could threaten chances of achieving sustainable development.

The Efficacy Of Urban Basic Services (UBS) Concept As A Poverty Alleviation Strategy: Empirical Evidence From Ibadan
Publication Authors:
 Okoko, E.E. And Omole, F.K.
Year Published:
 2008
Abstract:
This article reports on the impact of the UNICEF — assisted Urban Basic Services (UBS) programme in a geographically targeted region in Ibadan, Nigeria. Poverty alleviation programmes are usually targeted at the urban poor and they involve such projects as the construction of new health and educational facilities, physical development projects, and the provision of soft credit facilities to the poor. Urban Basic Services programme is a strategy adopted by UNICEF to render the afore-mentioned services to targeted poor communities in urban areas. A micro-level analysis of Ayeye /Agbeni targeted communities in Ibadan was the thrust of this research. The analysis of the survey data revealed that the UNICEF — assisted UBS poverty alleviation programme has benefited the targeted communities in at least three ways, namely; (i) in the improvement of the environmental health of the community, (ii) in the provision of housing and the associated technical infrastructural facilities; and (iii) in improving the standard of living of members of the community and ensuring them a decent and sustainable means of livelihood. The study concludes by calling for a greater NGO — government partnership in the targeted communities, and the involvement of other multinational and multilateral aid donor agencies in poverty alleviation not only in Ayeye/Agbeni communities, but in all the islands of poverty in Nigerian urban centres.

Year Published:
 2008
Abstract:
The problem of solid waste disposal in urban centres in developing countries is a major concern to governments, this problem become worrisome in Nigeria where the generation is always on the increase because of increased population pressure and some socio-economy factors. This study examines the influence of socio-economic factors on solid waste generation and disposal in Ibadan Metropolis, Nigeria. The objectives of the study are to identify the socio-economy characteristics of the people in the area, nature and the composition of solid waste generated, methods of disposal and relationship that exists between the socio-economic characteristics of the people and solid waste generation and disposal. Data for this study were obtained through the administration of questionnaires and review of existing literature. The information obtained from the field was analyzed using frequency and correlation matrix. The findings show that the composition of waste generated in Ibadan Metropolis is a reflection of variation of socio-economic factors of the people. Also socio-economic factors such as income, age, education, occupation and building types have greater influence in the choice of methods of disposal in Ibadan Metropolis. The paper recommends therefore that effective solid waste management can be achieved through the adoption of urban renewal strategy on the chaotic areas, provision of sizable fund by the government and proper education to the people among others.

Abstract:
Slum has become one of the prominent consequences of urbanisation worldwide. Hence; attempts are being made at different levels to eradicate or upgrade slum settlements. For several reasons, most renewal approaches to urban slums have failed: therefore, it has never been easy to eliminate the phenomenon. This paper presents an approach employed in regenerating one of Lagos` slum areas called Badia East and the level of success achieved. Situated within the core of Lagos metropolis, Badia East hosts over five hundred households of various origin inhabiting mostly in plank buildings. The residential unit were found not only insufficient in terms of habitable spaces but also have created unstable social conditions. They are not qualified as housing unit, in real sense of definition. This has informed the governments’ efforts at different times at eradicating the slum. For some reasons, including modalities employed lack of local cooperation the slum remains as it is until recently when cooperation of the residents was won. This paper focuses on versatility of modalities employed in soliciting and gaining the cooperation of the community members for renewal of the slum. The research was carried out using secondary and primary data obtained from the site using structured questionnaire and interview method. The results of the study showed that urban renewal can be carried out in any locality without disrupting the existing socio-cultural milieu provided that the residents are adequately informed.

Abstract:
Smoke drying among other traditional methods has remained a choice means of preserving fish products, one of the cheapest sources of animal protein in Nigeria. Among the locals, the most commonly found fish smoking facility is the open top/barrel type while few people have sought for an enclosed structure to achieve more effective heat work. Often, the shelf life quality and hygienic value of the smoked fish is largely dependent on the handling and processing facility. While inadequacies in the process which often lead to wastage had been generally noticed, the existing local facility/techniques certainly call for improvement. This paper reports on an experimental smoking kiln project developed based on a novel design and built using insulating refractory materials; towards improving the existing fish smoking kiln techniques in Nigeria with performance evaluation for recommendation.

Abstract:
The excess of man in his attempt to develop or exploit his environment is one of the global issues that call for control. This is perhaps why the government in every part of the world intervenes with promulgation and administration of laws. The use of laws to control man’s interactions with his environment has become a global issue today. A major aspect and function of planning law is to control and curb the excesses of developers. This is why the Nigerian Urban and Regional Planning Law (NURPL) has devoted about 47 sections out of its 92 sections to the issues of development control. This study brought its findings out from documentary analysis of some existing planning laws in Nigeria and more especially the NURPL and its recent criticisms and pronouncement by the Supreme Court judgment. The study critically pointed out that none of the Nigerian planning laws either existing or repealed can be said to be adequate in handling the complexity of physical planning administration in Nigeria. The study pointed out some grey areas and issues raised against the NURPL and therefore recommended among other things; that planning law should respect the culture and norms of the people. Secondly, that an intensive public participation in land matters and planning should be put in place and lastly that all tiers of government should work together in harmony for sustainable planning laws n Nigeria.

Abstract:
The pattern of development of urban land-use in relation to topography varies from rural to urban. What distinguishes Idanre community from other Yoruba settlements is the rocky topographical nature that surrounds and abounds within the community. In this paper, the effect of rock outcrops that surround the community and the effects on its development were investigated. The study employed both historical and descriptive analysis to gather relevant data about the origin and locational structure of the town. There were 3,620 existing buildings in the area according to the building demographic survey carried out. The seven quarters in the town were Sub-divided into twenty-two sectors from which 10.0% of the total buildings in all the sectors were picked as sample size for questionnaire administration. Our findings in the study show both positive and negative impacts that the rocky topography has on the community. The essential aspect of the discoveries were some viable potentials and topographical features of the town which need to be adequately harnessed and made used off for the benefit of the community and the state at large.
