Abstract:
Urban safety and security are major challenges across the world. Deprivation is seen as a major provocateur of violent behaviour and crime. This paper investigates the major issues relating to safety and security in Nigerian cities. The research involves a desk based analysis of crime survey data as well as other national statistics. The study reveals that the major triggers of violence in Nigerian cities are urban inequality, poor governance and youth unemployment. This has triggered widespread discontent and manifests as citizen disobedience and terrorism in extreme cases. The paper recommends strategies for achieving safer Nigerian cities and these include youth empowerment, effective poverty.: alleviation and the adoption of CPTED (Crime, Prevention Through Environmental Design) strategies in city management.

Abstract:
This study examines the operation of the passenger of ferry service as a mode of public transport in Lagos State. Methods of investigation include the use of questionnaire, interview schedule and observation method. 300 questionnaires were administered on the passengers at different ferry ports. Five sets of questionnaires were administered in each of the three Boats for four peak days. In addition to the questionnaire administration on the passengers, photographs and oral interviews were employed. Findings show that the Lagos State Ferry Service Corporation could not operate at full capacity, hence the Corporation could not enjoy full patronage. Other problems militating against the operation and performance range from shortage of fund, poor jetties, water hyacinth, silting, inability to adhere to fix scheduling and timing, poor toilet facilities among others. The Corporation was found to be doing well in augmenting the road transportation in Lagos State, but the service delivery in the areas of safety, comfort, fastness and timid economy are inadequate. Recommendations include the need to provide a modern terminal, building of parking lot and the need to introduce a new technology called popgun in ferry for cutting off the water hyacinth.

Child Abuse- An Indication Of Poor Urban Governance: A Searchlight Study From Akure, Nigeria

Abstract:
That a legitimate child is born is always the joy of parents, neighbours and well-wishers. This is why the birth of a child particularly in developing countries is usually accompanied by party and jubilation. What happens to the child years after, how is trained, what type of environment he or she grows up in, what type of education he or she receives, all lie on the parents and the society into which the child is born. This paper examines the issue of child abuse in an urban setting and how this affects the society in general. This study employed the use of questionnaires, interview and personal observation. Analysis includes the use of simple tools such as tables, percentages, the use of photographs and explanation paragraphs. This paper therefore identifies poverty among other reasons and suggests a desperate move by government, non-governmental organizations and parents to improve the general income level so as to enhance children upbringing and keep them away from manual jobs and slavery.

This study examines housing and Environmental health in Agege Local Government Area of Lagos State. Data were collected from randomly sampled 330 households in the Local Government and data analysis carried out with the aid of Computer Aided Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) Version 16. The technique used was univariate analysis which isa single variable analysis that describes the necessary features of the sets of data. The result of the analysis revealed that male households head were prominent among sampled respondents. The economic status of respondents was discovered to determine the type of apartments, utility of housing facilities and healthiness of the environment. The Brazilian types of houses known as ‘face to face’ or rooming apartments were prominent among respondents. The sources of water for drinking in the study area were discovered to come from well and buying from water vendors. Pit latrine was discovered to be the dominant means of faecal waste disposal. It was also discovered that there exist large household size which is tantamount to overcrowding. Sources of energy for cooking among the sampled households were discovered to be predominated with smoke emitting contrivances. The Chi-square analysis was used to test the hypotheses and the outcome revealed that there is a statistical significant relationship between the tested hypotheses. The study concluded that, high level of urbanization in Lagos coupled with economic deprivation has made its citizenry to seek for place of abode and not housing in its totality. This creates a city of low quality of life and transfer socio-economic and environmental health problems. The study recommended that the state and local government should endeavour to make towns and cities well organized with paved-tarred roads, good drainage system in appropriate places electricity and water supply green areas and aesthetically pleasing environment that will enhance environmental health and should placed stronger and higher commitment on the implementation compliance, and enforcement efforts among governments at the three tiers of governance in Nigeria so as to create bearable and livable urban development.

Abstract:
The growth of Nigeria’s urban population in both absolute and relative terms has been accompanied by city formation of existing built-up areas and the emergence of new and identifiably ‘urban’ settlements. The phenomenon has turned from being advantageous to problematic affecting most urbanized part of the country without recourse to solution out of this menace. This paper attempts an evaluation of urbanization dynamics and city formation in Nigeria with a view of making meaningful suggestions for sustainable development. Therefore, this paper explores the process of urbanization in Africa as well as Nigeria in which the threshold of urbanization in the continent were unfolded. The problems of city formation in Nigeria to include, urban housing degeneration, poverty, high death rate, disease epidemic, pollution and low biodiversity index among others. This limits the trend of sustainable urban development in Nigeria, while the effects of rapid urbanization on city formation in Nigeria include, urban sprawling, informal suburban development, informal development and activities of designated open space traffic congestion, increase tendencies in slum and informal settlement, social inequality exclusion, insecurity, climate change among others. This paper suggested that, to efficiently tackle these challenges and take advantage of the benefits of urbanization requires a coherent approach which should offer a distinct opportunity to achieve global strategic goals by dint of harnessing the transformative forces of urbanization. In ensuring the realization of sustainable development agenda the key players include the governments at federal, state and local levels, as well as the citizen/community alongside project facilitators and experts. The problems of urbanization if not tackled adequately could threaten chances of achieving sustainable
